Meet Kristin

Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist

Licensed Professional Counselor

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Virginia with nearly 15 years of experience helping individuals, adolescents, and families navigate life’s challenges. In 2019, I founded Sage Counseling & Consulting with the vision of creating a supportive, inclusive space where clients feel seen, heard, and empowered to heal.

My approach to therapy focuses on helping clients break free from unhealthy patterns and build more fulfilling relationships. I specialize in working with adults and adolescents facing challenges related to unhealthy relationships, intimate partner violence, childhood abuse and neglect, and self-esteem and self-worth. By using evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Reality Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), and Family Systems Theory, I guide clients toward greater self-awareness and lasting change.

In therapy sessions, I collaborate with my clients to explore the changes they want to make. Through thoughtful discussion and practical tools, I help them develop new insights, shift negative patterns, and improve their relationships. For clients who find spirituality meaningful, I also incorporate a non-religious spiritual approach that fosters a deeper sense of purpose, connection, and healing.

Beyond therapy, I provide clinical supervision for Residents in Counseling and Residents in Marriage and Family Therapy. Supporting new therapists as they grow in confidence and skill is something I’m deeply passionate about, and I strive to create a mentorship experience that is both enriching and educational.

My

Approach

I believe therapy should be personalized and collaborative.

I draw from a variety of evidence-based approaches, including:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) & Reality Therapy

In therapy, I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns, transforming your responses to difficult situations. I also incorporate Reality Therapy, a form of CBT, to focus on improving relationships and circumstances. We'll explore ways to counter reactions, control feelings / thoughts / behaviors, and notice aspects of our experience that we have the power to control.

Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT)

Using REBT, I’ll help you identify and challenge irrational beliefs that contribute to emotional distress and unhelpful behaviors. By exploring how you perceive and react to situations, we can work together to shift your thought patterns, enabling you to make healthier choices in how you approach challenges and interact with others.

Family Systems Theory and Systems Theory

Using Family Systems Theory, I’ll help you address personal challenges by examining your family’s dynamics and how they shape your experiences. When working with families, I focus on the interactions between family members to improve understanding and communication. Additionally, I may explore how your family, social relationships, environment, culture, and socioeconomic factors influence your behavior and choices
